End of Life & Remembrance

Comfort in Times of Sorrow

In times of loss, our clergy provide compassionate support and guidance, helping families navigate funeral services, shiva, and yahrzeit observances. We are here to ensure that Jewish traditions bring comfort and meaning as you honor the memory of your loved ones.

Bereavement

In the case where the death is expected, Clergy is available to visit the ill and aged to offer spiritual support, suggest funeral homes, advise on issues related to burial or cremation, and talk through relevant customs.

Unveiling

Typically, a few weeks before the first anniversary of a loved one’s passing, family members gather at the cemetery to “unveil” the gravestone of the deceased. This resource provides guidance for how to conduct this informal ceremony.

Remembrance

Yahrzeit (Anniversary of a Death)

Members are welcome to provide names of loved ones they want read aloud and written in our Order of Service before we recite Kaddish on Shabbat. Names are also added when a death occurs in a member’s family. Yahrzeit (anniversary of a death) reminders will be sent to members in advance of the specific Shabbat when the yahrzeit is observed. Contact our Clergy Department to add your loved one’s name.

Yizkor Services (Remembrance)

Special Yizkor (remembrance) liturgy is a part of Yom Kippur, Simchat Torah/Shmini Atzeret, Passover, and Shavuot services. Please check the synagogue calendar for the dates and times of these services.

Cemetery Plots

Congregation B’nai Israel can provide burial plots for our members. We have a dedicated section in The Star of David in North Lauderdale. This location is ideal because in Florida, there are few areas that offer both easy and accessible plots along with an upright monument. Our section provides a water view and a paved walkway. For more information, contact Steve Allen, Executive Director at 561.241.8118 ext. 101.

Clergy also often speak with members before a death is imminent to offer spiritual support, suggest funeral homes, advise on issues related to burial or cremation, and talk through relevant customs.

To speak with a member of our clergy about a loss in your family, please contact Joanna Horowitz, Clergy Administrator at 561.241.8118.
